Winter in the Triangle will arrive soon, and while Sierra Structures hopes you were able to enjoy your screened-in porch during the warmer months of the year, the time has come to consider winterizing that porch to protect it from the cold weather that is on its way. This blog provides you with three possible ways to winterize your screened-in porch.
Before you begin, we recommend that you first give your porch a good solid cleaning. The cleaner it is, the better your chances are of avoiding mold and mildew during the winter.
- Install vinyl sheets over your screens. Clear vinyl sheets can effectively seal off the screens and keep out the cold, wind, and any snow or rain. Before you do it, measure each screen and make sure they are thick enough to withstand the elements without tearing. Use an adhesive such as Velcro tape that is non-permanent to avoid damaging your walls or windowsills.
- Check all seals and cracks and add a sealant. Use a waterproof caulk or other material over any area or cracks in which cold air or moisture can enter your porch. Any way in which the outside elements can enter your porch needs to be sealed off.
- Remove all warm weather furniture and decorations. If you have wooden furniture, glass or ceramic items, cushions, rugs, or other materials that are not specifically made for outdoor use, you should bring them inside to protect them.
